A recent post titled "Lost in Transmission" discusses words or phrases that have changed over time to the point where the original meaning is lost. <br />http://www.strangehistory.net/2012/05/04/generation-garbling/.Stan Hingstonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17206087800986665763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3432752512801638310.post-43306727899876622892011-09-26T22:06:17.715-06:002011-09-26T22:06:17.715-06:00Ky - too funny! Either the author didn't do his/her research thoroughly or decided to apply poetic license and hope that most of the readers wouldn't know the difference. Were the other three Ridings mentioned in the story? If one of them, say North Riding, had been omitted and replaced with South, it would be fine. It's interesting to find out that a South thriding would be impossible, since it was already divided into 3 with West, East, and North.Kyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01420293836826396933noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3432752512801638310.post-81538302354133106942011-09-25T23:09:32.313-06:002011-09-25T23:09:32.313-06:00Good post. Often wondered and thoght it had to do with campaigning on horseback or something. Made my morning. I have been reading a new book by David Crystal called "By Hook or by Crook - a Journey in Search of English" which I will be drawing from for my next few posts. Most of the information for this post came from this book.Stan Hingstonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17206087800986665763noreply@blogger.com
